TMJ (temporomandibular joint) syndrome or disorder causes chronic jaw pain. Your pain can come and go when you suffer from TMJ issues. Treatment can help eliminate your pain through properly aligning your jaw bone and muscles.
TMJ syndrome primarily impacts your jaw joints and areas of your face including your muscles, nerves, and connective tissue. The disorder is often associated with stress, a misaligned bite (malocclusion), and teeth grinding (bruxism).
Your pain can be treated. In many cases treating the root cause will provide you relief from headaches and other TMJ symptoms plus improve your overall oral health.
General pain and stress relief can be achieved with prescribed medication. Muscle relaxers are common and are also effective for controlling teeth grinding.
Orthodontics can treat your bite related problems associated with TMJ. Proper jaw movement will help provide relief from jaw pain and other symptoms. A mouth guard or bite guard is another effective treatment. Custom designed mouth guards from your dentist help prevent teeth grinding that's associated with TMJ.
Missing tooth replacement can also help reduce TMJ pain. Dental implants, dental bridges, and a full or partial denture fill your missing tooth gaps and eliminate your bite irregularities.
Oral surgery can be considered as a final treatment. If your facial muscles and jaw bone have suffered severe damage surgical procedures can correct the misalignment and treat your TMJ symptoms. It's essential to communicate your symptoms and issues with your dentist. We can recommend the proper solution once the details of your disorder are diagnosed.
