Periodontal Disease begins with gingivitis and progresses to the more serious condition known as periodontitis. Inconsistent brushing and flossing can lead to the build-up of dental plaque.
Periodontal disease attacks your sensitive gum tissue. Swollen, irritated gums are an early indication that gingivitis could be occurring. Untreated periodontal symptoms can evolve into periodontal disease. Your bone and gum tissue will begin to erode leading to loose teeth and eventually tooth loss.
Watch for common warning signs:
The early phase of periodontal disease (gingivitis) is reversible with professional dental care and consistent at-home oral hygiene. Advanced gum disease is treatable with periodontics that include deep cleanings and the non-surgical treatment known as scaling and root planing.
Your dentist or professional dental hygienist will clean the root surfaces beneath your gum line during a scaling and root planing procedure. This removes the harmful, hardened tartar build up from your teeth and gum tissue.
Other oral surgery procedures can also be used for advanced periodontal disease. Crown lengthening and tissue grafts can help treat certain periodontal conditions.
Contact one of our London Ontario & Area offices about your periodontal (gum) issues. Schedule a dental examination to observe your symptoms and discuss your treatment options :)
