YOUR TEETH ARE IN GOOD HANDS
Sleep apnea is a condition that directly affects how you breathe during sleep. It causes you to stop breathing periodically. This can occur as many as 20 to 30 times per hour.
Your brain becomes deprived of oxygen each time you fail to breathe properly. The condition triggers you to awaken momentarily before you continuing sleeping.
You will lack the necessary deep and restful sleep when you are awakened throughout your sleep cycle. Your sleep apnea symptoms are most noticeable as you feel drowsy the following day.
Other sleep apnea symptoms include:
Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form. It happens when the soft tissue at the back of your throat collapses and creates a blockage. The blockage leads to an inability to breathe properly.
There are health risks associated with obstructive sleep apnea. It's a serious condition that if untreated can increase your risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and heart failure.
Sleep apnea causes fatigue as well. This can lead to work related problems, difficulty focusing, and strained relationships.
Your treatment is determined by the severity and type of sleep apnea you are experiencing. A custom-designed oral device can be prescribed to improve your breathing by opening your airway.
In some cases this treatment method can replace your need for a sleep apnea machine (CPAP device). The oral appliance is effective for the airway restriction associated with obstructive sleep apnea.
It's important to determine your specific sleep apnea cause. A proper treatment can be recommended once the severity of your condition is diagnosed.
Contact one of our London Ontario & Area offices about your sleep related problems. Schedule a consultation to discuss your specific sleep apnea causes and treatment options :)
